Classic Margarita with Tequila & Grand Marnier

This classic margarita recipe is equal parts fresh lime juice and tequila. A smaller amount of Grand Marnier and simple syrup offer sweet and citrusy notes. A sea salt rim + lots of ice are essential. I first made this recipe many years ago, and I’ve never looked back. The secret? Fresh-squeezed lime juice — nothing compares.
I learned how to make a margarita from How Sweet Eats, whose author, Jessica Merchant, has posted over 10 margarita recipes on her blog over the years. She’s really a pro.
For years I made her classic margarita recipe as written. But when a dear friend’s mother, Anne, emailed me telling me she made the recipe to rave reviews with double the amount of tequila, I decided to give it a go.
After several experiments, I discovered Anne was onto something. The results of my tinkering are reflected below, but in essence the recipe is equal parts fresh lime juice and tequila and a smaller amount of equal parts Grand Marnier and simple syrup.
The key? Fresh squeezed lime juice. Yes, juicing limes takes time, but it is so worth the effort. Nothing compares to freshly squeezed lime juice. Put on your favorite podcast, and get juicing.
How to Make a Margarita
- Make a simple syrup: combine 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan, and heat until sugar dissolves. Let cool. If you are pressed for time, simply stir together the sugar and water till the sugar is mostly dissolved.
- Juice enough limes to yield 1 cup of freshly squeezed juice.
- Combine: Pour the 1 cup of lime juice into a 4-cup liquid measure. Add 1 cup tequila. Add 3/4 cup each Grand Marnier and simple syrup. Stir to combine.
- Pour salt onto a shallow plate. Rim the edge of 4 glasses with a lime wedge; then dip each into the salt. Fill each glass with ice. Pour margarita mixture into each glass. Squeeze in a wedge of lime.

To make simple syrup: combine equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan, and heat until sugar dissolves. Let cool. For this recipe, I’ve been doing about 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water. There will be a little bit leftover, which you can save for future margaritas or add to your mixture to taste.
Ingredients
- 8 ounces (1 cup) Tequila, see notes above
- 6 ounces (3/4 cup) Grand Marnier
- 8 ounces (1 cup) lime juice, plus more to taste
- 6 ounces (3/4 cup) simple syrup, see notes above
- salt for the rim, I’ve been using Maldon sea salt
- lime wedges for salt rim and garnish
Instructions
- In 4-cup liquid measure, stir together the the grand marnier, tequila, lime juice, and simple syrup.
- Pour salt onto a shallow plate. Rim the ridge of each glass with a lime wedge, and dip in salt. Fill the glass with ice. Pour margarita mixture into each glass. Squeeze in a wedge of lime.

Simple, yet delicious. I prefer Grand Marnier as well. Reposado Tequila is the best for a great Margarita…much more depth of flavor, yet without the wood aged character.
Great to know, James! As I noted, I am not a margarita connoisseur, so any recommendations on any element here are welcomed. By chance I had used reposado tequila, and I had been looking for a brand that a friend recommended but I couldn’t find it. The one I used worked just fine. Anyway, a friend made these recently and said she doubled the tequila and it was perfect for her, so that works, too 🙂
Fresh lime juice is key. Not to mention top shelf tequila. like Herradura Añejo.

Add some chilli to the salt for rimming the glass it adds a zing……just came back from a week of drinking g this!!!!!

I just loved it.
We used this as a base recipie. We went 2-2 tequila and Grand Marnier, 1.5’ish c fresh lime and only added simple syrup to taste. We liked a more tang than sweet margarita. I wanted everyone to dress their own glasses so I had ice, blood orange slices and corse salt. Run the orange slice along the glass edge and add ice and margarita from pitcher. Add pinch of salt into margarita glass, not rim. It was a decadent drink. Grand Marnier really adds depth.
That sounds so good! More and more, I prefer things less sweet as well. Glad you were able to tailor the recipe to your liking!

Holy Alcohol! Loved these! The best recipe I’ve used. I’m doing WW so I’ve tried to leave out the Grand Marnier but it can’t be done for a good margarita. *If you do t like a string drink this is not the recipe for you.

Hi, I am a big mixology enthusiast and this margarita tastes great! My one recommendation (essential) is to include shaking the margarita with ice for about 30 shakes before you pour it over the ice in the glass. Shaking a margarita is essential and should always be the preparation. Drinks like Boulevardiers with no citrus are stirred, but drinks with citrus juice like this are always shaken. This has become my go to recipe – perfect alcohol to lime juice ratio. Most of the time I’m too lazy to make simple syrup so I juice add a little agave nectar – still tastes great! *I’ve tried a few different tequilas but I like 1800 best.

This is by far the BEST margarita recipe I’ve found. All my guests love it! The Grand Marnier gives it that extra punch of flavor with its cognac/orange infusion. I used Gold Tequila and it was delicious.

This is truly my kind of margarita. I’ve been playing around with recipes over the years and never found the perfect one. This is it! I knew I liked the Anejo tequila (versus blanco) and grand marnier but I could never get the proportions right. This is perfect! Then on those days when I don’t want so much sugar I will drop the simple syrup. Thank you!

Such a refreshing recipe. I added smoked salt to the rim, and it was soooooo good! Next time, I’m muddling jalapenos in the glass too.
