♬♬♬ It’s the most wonderful time of the year… ♬♬♬
I hum this to myself a lot: When my first CSA arrives in June. When the first good tomatoes all but fall of the vine in early September. When snowflakes the size of golf balls drop from the sky. AND, most of all, when it’s time to talk about cookbooks with my friend Margaret Roach, the master gardener behind A Way to Garden
Last year, we talked about all-time favorites, the first books we ever owned, and the ones with the most besmirched pages. This year, we’ve kept our chat to the latest crop: the fall and winter 2018 cookbooks, and we hope our chat might give you some ideas for gift giving this season. Rest assured, there is something for everyone — the bakers, the boozers, the pie lovers, the pizza lovers, the Ina fans, the Dorie fans, the gadget collectors, and more.
Read the transcript or listen here.
I have not had a chance to cook from all of the books we discussed, and there are many others I haven’t even had a chance to page through yet, namely Emily: The Cookbook, which is #1 on my Christmas wishlist—Santa, hope you’re reading. That said, I have cooked from a number of the season’s new books, and I’ve included some notes below.
ALSO, Margaret and I are each giving away 12 cookbooks (!!!). To enter, leave a comment below: tell me what your favorite cookbook is for gifting (or just your favorite) and a little bit about why. Now, go double your chances to win by copying your comment into the comment box over at Margaret’s website.

Cook90: On January 1st 2016, David Tamarkin of Epicurious resolved to cook more — to cook 3 meals a day for an entire month — an experiment he called “Cook90”. In the end, he emerged a better, faster, and healthier cook, and he has since inspired hundreds of thousands of others to take the challenge. His cookbook, Cook90, outlines exactly how to do it: recipes, strategies, meal plans, and more.
Category #2: Global Flavors
Category #3: Baking
Category #4: Nose-to-Tail
Waste Not: Learned about this one through Margaret and her podcast with Top Chef star Tiffany Derry. Waste Not is a new cookbook from the James Beard Foundation and a campaign of anti-food waste advocacy spearheaded by that organization.
Now and Again: The latest from Julia Turshen, who believes a complete meal doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive, that leftovers can lead to inventive/fun cooking, and that gathering people around the table for a meal is a good thing. Organize both by season and menu — a brunch or an easy Thanksgiving. Helpful tips about what can be made ahead of time. Each menu is followed by a section called “It’s Me Again,” which offers a few recipes for using the leftovers.
And last but not least:
Rebekah Peppler’s Apéritif: For Francophiles and beyond, Apèritif offers recipes for both classic and modern French cocktails, along with French-inspired bites and hors d’oeuvres.

From many years ago, Mediterranean Light by Martha Rose Shulman. Mediterranean recipes that are lighter in fat and calories, yet absolutely delivious flavors.
My favorite cookbook for gifting is the one I wrote 26 years ago . . . Fruit-Sweet and Sugar-Free 🙂
The cookbook I refer back to the most is How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman. It includes a lot of great information. I also love the Martha Stewart’s collection of cookbooks because they are beautiful and Cook’s Illustrated cookbooks because of their scientific approach to pinning down the best versions of recipes and techniques.
Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone by Deborah Madison.
I am in the process of moving and realized I have at least 3 — possibly 4 — generations’ favorite cookbooks. I thought I knew my favorites but as I have leafed though some of my Mom’s and Grandma’s I realize I love them all [well almost]. I am a cookbook addict>>
Any of these cookbooks would be a real treat to me!
Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book for the basics and pictures.
Such a wonderful gift to win. Thanks.
Mediterranean Light by Martha Rose Shulman. Her recipes include lots of fish, fresh veggies, and healthy fats – it’s the way I like to eat right now. But with winter coming on I’m looking forward to pulling out the recipes for hearty soups.
My favorite cookbook (for the moment) is The Healthy Mind Cookbook by Rebecca Katz with Mat Edelson. Everything I have tried has been delicious. I appreciate her descriptions on each ingredients contribution to brain function. I love to give as a gift because my friends and I joke about how we can’t remember anything anymore! 🙂
I love all of Ina’s cookbooks! She makes it so easy! Plus they make great gifts! So many great cookbooks!!
My favorite cookbook is Food Revolution by Jamie Oliver. It was my first “real” cookbook! The chicken and leek stroganoff is still a family favorite!!
Ina’s Cook Like A Pro was given to me as a birthday present, and I have gifted it to several friends since then. Love all her cookbooks, and especially her tips.
Fields of Greens by Deborah Madison. Great vegetarian recipes from the Greens restaurant in San Francisco.
I love buying cookbooks! I just recently downsized my collection by donating around 60 to VVA. (Vietnam Veterans of America) My favorite style of cookbook are those that give a personal commentary prior to the recipe. I also enjoy ethnic cookbooks. They push me outside my culinary comfort zone and I so enjoy the challenge!
Happy Holidays to all!
Joy of Cooking. I read it cover to cover, enjoying every bit, 35 years ago and it taught me to be the cook I am today. I will buy a copy for my children and hope it inspires them to cook a lifetime of healthy meals. Thank you for the giveaway!
My first cookbook memory was of my mother’s ‘The Settlement Cookbook’. The cover was creamy white and smooth with a line drawing of little girls lined up walking towards a heart that had ‘The way to a man’s heart’ written above it. I firmly believe that the cover art on the dust jacket entices the reader to go in. From it, I learned how to make a ‘scratch’ cake with chocolate icing. It was all uphill from there. Some of my all-time favs include ‘The Joy of Cooking’, Martha’s ‘Entertaining’, Moosewood Cookbook, plus a collection of the ever fun-to-read church community and womens’ clubs little spiral cookbooks with their well loved family recipes that people have passed down through the generations. Ambrosia salad, anyone?
Baking bread was my passion for 2018 so I’ve used the King Arthur “Whole Grain Baking” cookbook almost every day. I do admit to jumping to their website to change the volume measurements to grams but love all the great photos and precise directions in the book. Who knew how easy it was to make pretzels and crackers?
My favorite cookbook has easy to follow instructions for meals that does not need trips to a dozen stores to get ingredients thatbare out of the ordinary. Great pictures are a must to make me salivate already when perusing the book. Added bonus is a great vegetarian section or the possibility to make recipes vegetarian/vegan-friendly.
My favorite books to gift are any Barefoot Contessa. Her recipes are spot on.
What a great idea for a holiday giveaway!
What a generous offer. All of these books are an invitation into a world of nourishment, appreciation and delight! Thanks to you both.
Weeknight Wonders by Ellie Krueger. Simple recipes that typically use fresh ingredient I tend to have on hand.
One of my go-to cookbook is Mark Bittman’s “How to Cook Everything”….I often just need a reference for timing, etc. My other book of necessity is called “The Flavor Bible” by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg… this one is awesome for putting together a recipe of your own!
My current favourite isn’t a cookbook per se, but Salt Fat Acid Heat by Nosrat has been an inspiration and excellent teacher lately.
Count me in! I don’t think I can pick a favorite cookbook. There are too many choices and I love each for a different reason. I read them like “regular” books. I try to curtail my buying by test reading them from the library first but that only slows me down a little bit. Thanks for the new suggestions!
I have hundreds of cookbooks, but my two favorites are the 1961 first edition of the New York Times Cookbook by Craig Claiborne which I purchased used sometimes in the late ’60s and The Art of Fine Baking by Paula Peck, also 1961 and purchased around the same time. These are the books that taught me cooking and baking.
I’ve given more of these than I can count (along with an accompanying pound of beans), but Heirloom Beans by Steve Sando is one of my favorites to give and to cook out of.
Thank you to both of you for the excellent round-up and giveaway!
The Smitten Kitchen cookbooks make great gifts, she’s so accessible and her recipes are always a hit. I often look to her website for weekday meals as well.
A cookbook I’m cracking open this time of year is Dorrie’s Cookies, I’ve replaced quite a few of my holiday cookie standbys with her recipes. Such a well written book with amazing recipes.
PS I’m so glad I’ve found you from listening to you on A Way to Garden, I’m a cookbook junkie as well and I’m loving your site.
I don’t have one favorite I give or like to use but love those that have healthy eating/ easy recipes. always looking for new ones and new recipes.
I love giving Salt Fat Acid Heat by Samin Nosrat as a gift. It’s just a beautiful book- great recipes, really thoughtful writing, and beautiful artwork!
